Bach and Gospel Songs. Featured are the deeply reflective cantata, Ich Habe Genung (I Have Enough) and the Brandenburg Concerto no.6 in B Flat Major. Oak Park's Paradise Baptist Church Choir will join Michael Morgan in this unique and fun concert to begin the holiday season. American Stories "American Stories" is told through the music of great composers, in collaboration with the UC Davis Theater Department. Concerts are March 13,14, and 15, at 8pm. It will feature the West Coast Premier of a work by trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis. The concert will also include Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring, a celebration of the American pioneers of the 1800's. Originally a ballet created at the request of choreographer and dancer Martha Graham, Copland was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1945 for the work. George Gershwin's Strike up the Band Suite was based on a book by George S. Kaufman. It is a political satire that centers on a cheese tycoon who tries to maintain his monopoly on the American market by convincing the United States government to declare war on Switzerland. As a musical, Strike up the Band closed after a single performance in Philadelphia in 1927. The anti-war theme was softened for a 1930 Broadway run and by the time it was made into a movie in 1940 starring Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney it had no relation to the original stage production. A Fiddler's Tale by Wynton Marsalis, text by Stanley Crouch, is inspired by the classic A Soldier's Tale by Igor Stravinksy. A Fiddler's Tale tells the story of a young musician who sells her soul to her record producer. The only jazz artist ever to win a Pulitzer Prize for music, Wynton Marsalis' music continues to impact far beyond the core jazz and classical audiences.
