Job Description – Sacramento Philharmonic Development Director
Classification: Full-time, exempt
Reports to: Executive Director and CEO
Supervises: Development/Administrative Assistant (shared with ED) and volunteers
Position Summary
The Development Director is responsible for planning, directing, and executing a comprehensive Development Program that achieves the annual and special fundraising goals as determined by the Executive Director and the Philharmonic’s Board of Directors. The Development Director serves as primary staff liaison to the fundraising committee of the Board and supports the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major donors and prospects. The DD also assists the Sacramento Philharmonic Foundation in marketing planned and endowment gifts, and in helping to build and sustain effective relationships for the Philharmonic within the Sacramento philanthropic and business community. The DD serves as a key member of the executive team and works closely with the Executive Director and the Finance Director on a daily basis.
Reflecting the current priorities of the Philharmonic, it is anticipated that the Development Director's time will be apportioned according to the following breakdown:
Annual Fund 50% time
Planned Giving 10% time
Board Support 10% time
Event Management 10% time
Staff Management 10% time
Development Systems 10% time
Priorities will be re-evaluated in consultation with the Board Fund Development and the Executive Director on a regular basis. The DD's time allocations may be adjusted accordingly, depending upon the needs of the organization.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
1. Creates and implements an annual Development Plan for the Philharmonic that includes: cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities for the Annual Fund, for endowment and planned gifts (in conjunction with the Sacramento Philharmonic Foundation), and for special campaigns and events. Duties include writing fundraising appeals, acknowledgements and related correspondence, developing and implementing donor benefits and recognition, and targeting solicitations according to donors’ interests and giving histories.
2. With a focus on major gifts, supports the Executive Director and the Board of Directors – primarily through the fundraising committee -- in developing and stewarding effective and strategic relationships with major donors and prospects in all categories: individuals, foundations, corporations, and businesses. Manages board members’ cultivation and solicitation assignments, provides back-up materials and support, and represents the Philharmonic at community events to enhance the organization’s visibility and reputation.
3. Working with the Executive Director, develops and generates institutional support for the Philharmonic, including the identification of potential foundation and corporate funders; writes and prepares grant applications, corporate sponsorship solicitations, and reports for funders; and monitors deadlines and delivers benefits that are included with sponsorship packages.
4. Identifies planned giving prospects, creates recognition opportunities, and assists the Sacramento Philharmonic Foundation Board in marketing planned and endowment gifts.
5. Develops all fundraising-related content on Philharmonic website and manages on-line giving.
6. Directs, oversees, and ensures effective database management of donor records and related data, conducts analyses and evaluation of fundraising programs and results, and produces contributed revenue reports for the Executive Director, Finance Director, and the Board of Directors.
7. Develops and monitors annual fundraising budgets – expense and revenue projections -- modifying expenditures and re-forecasting on a regular basis throughout the year as necessary, depending upon cash flow and the success of fundraising campaigns to ensure that financial goals are met.
8. Oversees and produces fundraising and cultivation activities, and special events. Designs events to achieve maximum fundraising potential, positive exposure for the Philharmonic, and effective community relations. Works closely with volunteer and Board leadership, and Philharmonic staff on event implementation.
9. Supervises the Development Assistant and recruits, manages, and supports volunteers and Board members in their Development efforts on behalf of the Philharmonic.
10. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills
* Minimum three years as a Development Director or equivalent with experience supervising staff, and successfully motivating and supporting board members and volunteers in Development activities. Proven track record securing major gifts and achieving annual fundraising goals of $1M+.
* Strategic thinker, ability to develop a comprehensive Development plan and prioritize goals and activities; implement creative and innovative short- and long-term strategies to achieve fundraising goals and effective community relations with limited financial and human resources.
* Persuasive communicator: possesses exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills. Effective problem-solver, highly attentive to details, and ensures accuracy of information.
* Facility with Microsoft Office and fundraising database management (Raiser’s Edge preferred); ability to create fundraising systems, generate reports and oversee on-line giving; expertise creating and managing budgets, and organizing events.
* Excellent management and organizational skills; effective leader, collaborator and team player.
* Bachelor’s degree required; knowledge and appreciation of symphony orchestras or arts organizations preferred.
* CFRE desirable
Compensation – $55,000 – 63,000 DOE
